Rhonda Sawyer
I grew up in the Nickerson Gardens Housing complex in Watts. My mom did all she could to make sure we had the best life possible but we never were exposed to much. Then a woman came into our lives, Tai Collins. She took us to summer camp, on trips to the beach and to restaurants. She made sure we saw the world and had dreams. When my senior prom came, she got me my dress and helped me get ready. I never would have believed I would feel so beautiful. Like a princess. She made sure my family was always okay. When we moved from the projects into an apartment and had no furniture, Tai came with a truck full of beds and a couch and dishes and towels. My mom always says she would take out her heart and give it to Tai because she has been so good to us. I love her dearly and am grateful to her and A Chance for Children for directing my life and that of my sister and brother and now nephew.
